Hello Spring

Spring is one of the four temperate seasons, succeeding winter and preceding summer. There are various technical definitions of spring, but local usage of the term varies according to local climate, cultures and customs. When it is spring in the Northern Hemisphere, it is autumn in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa. At the spring (or vernal) equinox, days and nights are approximately twelve hours long, with daytime length increasing and nighttime length decreasing as the season progresses.

Spring and "springtime" refer to the season, and also to ideas of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, and regrowth. Subtropical and tropical areas have climates better described in terms of other seasons, for example, dry or wet, monsoonal or cyclonic.

A Little History of Money

A long time ago, people did not buy or sell with money. Instead, they traded one thing for another to get what they wanted or needed. One person who owned cows could trade, or barter, with another person who owned wheat. Each would trade a little of what they had with the other. Other things that were easier to carry around than cows also came to be held as valuable.

When people changed from trading things like cows and wheat to using money instead, they needed things that would last a long time. They must still be worth something, and be carried around. The first country in the world to make metal coins was called Lydia. The Lydian coins were made of precious metals and were stamped with a picture of a lion. This idea soon spread to the rest of the world. Coins were all made to the same size and shape.

Later, paper money started out as a promise to pay in coin, much like an "I.O.U." note. The first true paper money was used in China around the year 900. Massachusetts Bay Colony printed paper money in the 1690s. This time, the use became more common. Today, coins and paper money are still used, but there are also debit and credit cards!

What is a credit union?

  • A credit union, like SeaComm, is a cooperative financial institution that is owned and controlled by its members.
  • Credit unions differ from banks and other financial institutions in that the members who have accounts in the credit union are the owners of the credit union, meaning there are no external shareholders.
  • Profits gained from the operations of a credit union benefit members through better rates and higher returns.
  • The basic services of a credit union are to offer savings accounts and loans to their members.

Make Your Own Tissue Paper Flowers!

What You Will Need:

  1. Colored Tissue Paper
  2. Pipe Cleaner

How to Make:

  1. Layer 4 sheets of tissue paper (alternate colors).
  2. Make a half-inch fold, flip the paper over and fold again until it is all folded like an accordian.
  3. Fold your pipe cleaner around the middle of the tissue paper and twist it so the center of the paper bunches up.
  4. Carefully start pulling the tissue paper up on the ends and mold your shape.
