Sixty Years and Counting...
Celebrating 60 Years of Service
In 1963, ten visionary employees of Chevrolet Aluminum Foundry of GM Corporation in Massena invested $5 each to obtain a share in a newly formed organization that we know today as SeaComm Federal Credit Union. The toolbox is still iconic for us today and can be seen in the lobbies of all our branches. The shared vision of the ten GM workers was to improve the financial lives of not only themselves, but also of their coworkers.
“Even though assets have grown from $50 to more than $800 million, and with the GM plant no longer in operation, that vision is no less important today than it was back on June 6, 1963,” states SeaComm President & Chief Executive Officer Scott A. Wilson. “The incredible responsibility started by the original ten signers, is respected and continued today by our Board of Directors, management team and dedicated staff.”
The ten individuals who signed the Charter of Incorporation 60 years ago were James G. Capell, Paul R. Catlin, James R. Ellis, Harold H. Guile, Earl M. Jackson, Carl L. MacDonald, Darrell Mills, Max M. Ryan, Frank E. Sequin and John Zakarauskas. Earl Jackson, the remaining charter member, is still an active member of the credit union today.
After the establishment of the credit union in 1963, the need for expanded community locations was warranted and subsequent branches were opened in Potsdam (1985), Malone (1990), Canton (2004), Ogdensburg (2010), Plattsburgh (2017), and Watertown (2021), New York and South Burlington (2020) and Essex (2021), Vermont. As we have evolved throughout the years, we've grown to offer even more products and services such as NetTeller™, electronic services, Mobile Branch and our expanded Call Center.
As we continue to evolve and build upon the vision that the ten employees of GM dreamed about, staying true to ‘People Helping People’, we are truly humbled in what they decided to start building,” adds Wilson. “We are committed to carrying on such a rich history, while continuing the journey that was started six decades ago.”
Today, SeaComm serves northern New York and northwestern Vermont with more than 53,900 members and assets of over $800 million.
SeaComm Branches Join CO-OP
As of September 11th, 2023 SeaComm has joined the ATM and Shared Branches CO-OP which continues to allow SeaComm and other credit union members to visit CO-OP labeled shared branches and ATM’s across the nation without a surcharge-fee. Previously, only our ATMs offered that capability to non-SeaComm members but we have now opened our branches as well allowing them to access their accounts when visiting our branches. This addition helps to expand the availability of surcharge-free services to both SeaComm and non-SeaComm credit union members.

Our company culture is our top priority. Diamond Award
We were recently honored with a Diamond Award by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Marketing and Business Development Council. The credit union won in the “Ongoing Event” category for its Pay-It-Forward Program.
The CUNA Diamond Award, recognizes and rewards credit unions that show creative excellence while garnering outstanding results. The selection committee evaluates entries based on strategy, concept, production and communication. Throughout the year, SeaComm produced (26) Pay-It-Forward events and attributes its success to the focus of spreading positivity in the communities it serves. The program has allowed the credit union to deliver random acts of kindness throughout the region since 2017.
MAC Award
SeaComm won a Silver Marketing Association of Credit Unions (MAC) Award for Community Engagement. MAC was created in 1986 to celebrate the work of marketers in the credit union industry. Judges are comprised of marketing, advertising, media and social media experts – both inside and outside of the financial industry.
Dora Maxwell Award
We are honored to have received first place for the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award in recognition of our Pay-It-Forward Program. This award is presented to credit unions that strengthen local institutions and are recognized for outstanding social responsibility within the communities it serves.

“These awards are a testament that we are fulfilling the credit union philosophy of ‘People Helping People’ and we are committed to giving back to the communities we serve,” states Scott A. Wilson, SeaComm President & Chief Executive Officer. “During the last few years, our neighbors have been affected by economic uncertainty in various ways, and the Pay-It-Forward Program enables SeaComm the chance to deliver good will to local residents.”
Last year, SeaComm impacted more than 4,300 people with random acts of kindness. This included surprising local businesses with free lunch, sponsoring the adoption costs at area animal shelters, paying for orders at local coffee shops, delivering breakfast to first responders, and much more. Each event is free to the public, and most are announced in advance on the SeaComm Facebook page. Individuals who receive an act of kindness are encouraged to “pay it forward” to others, contributing to a chain reaction of positivity in the community.

Performing Random Acts of Kindness Since 2017
Titus Mountain - Malone, NY
SeaComm recently covered the cost of tubing passes at Titus Mountain in Malone. Beginning at 11am, the first 145 individuals to arrive at the tubing hill on Sunday, February 12, had their tubing pass paid for by the credit union. SeaComm staff also provided each individual with winter hats, ice scrapers, complimentary donuts, and other giveaway items.

Chapter One Coffee - Plattsburgh, NY
SeaComm recently paid for orders at Chapter One Coffee & Tea in Plattsburgh. The event was announced in advance on the credit union’s Facebook page, and more than 100 individuals enjoyed free coffee, tea, and food items of their choice. SeaComm also provided customers with reusable grocery totes, phone fans, reusable straws, and more.

Shorty's Place - Watertown, NY
SeaComm recently covered the cost of orders at Shorty’s Place diner in Watertown. The event was announced in advance, and more than 200 people received free lunch paid for by the credit union on Thursday, June 8. SeaComm staff also provided each individual with phone fans, pocket screwdrivers and other giveaway items.

Essex Family Fun & Entertainment - Essex, VT
SeaComm recently paid for rounds of mini golf at Essex Family Fun & Entertainment Center. The event was announced in advance and 100 individuals enjoyed a free round of mini golf paid for by the credit union on Friday, June 23. SeaComm staff also provided each individual with ball caps, phone fans, reusable straws and other giveaway items. This event is part of the credit union’s Pay-It-Forward Program, which enables SeaComm staff to perform random acts of kindness in the community.

Report of the President & Chief Executive Officer
As we move well into the third quarter, SeaComm continues to be on target to meet our expected forecast set forth in the FY23 board-approved operating budget. Member satisfaction, staff engagement and overall profitability continues to remain above expectation.
Our Financial Position Today Continues to Remain Solid
Net income as of July 31, 2023 was $4,620,255. Our net assets at the end of July were $800,827,770. At the same time, net operating expenses YTD were 1.93%, well below the 3% targeted goal set by the credit union’s budget. However, dividend expense is up more than $887,000 compared to budget. Today, we have $109 million in unrealized earnings. Capital remains a key component to our financial health, as it is necessary to grow adequate reserves so we are able to withstand any uncertainty as our assets continue to increase and thereby be viable well into the future. As a large financially complex credit union, we are required to maintain a risk-based capital ratio at minimum of 10%. Today, we stand at 24.67%, well above what is required.
Bauer Financial, another independent rating company, has awarded us their Superior Five-Stars. They analyze the performance of U.S. Banks and Credit Unions. The star ratings classify each credit union based upon a complex formula which factors in data including, but not limited to: capital, historical trends, loan delinquencies, differences in the book and market values of the investment portfolio, profitability, repossessed assets, reserves, charge-offs, regulatory compliance and asset quality. It has deemed SeaComm as safe, financially sound, and that we are operating well above regulatory capital requirements.
Weiss, an independent rating agency rated us with a “B” rating as of Q1 FY23. This means we offer good financial security and we have the resources to deal with a variety of adverse economic conditions.
We comfortably exceed the minimum levels for all of our rating criteria, and are likely to remain healthy for the near future.
Annual Meeting
In my report at this year’s annual meeting held in May, we were able to announce 2022 was another solid year for SeaComm. Highlights for the previous year, which included: earnings exceeding budget, membership growth at 3 percent, continued increase market share penetration with our newest location in Watertown, NY, as well as a solid year for our SeaComm Personal Advisor Services with over $72 million of assets under management. We also saw an increase in our mobile technology usage with a growth of 24%. Member satisfaction remained consistently high with an overall quality loop score of 6.81 out of 7.
The overall message we relayed was that SeaComm is committed to ensuring our members get the very best in member service, core products and a diverse delivery channel model at any point it is needed. Three Directors were elected to 3-year terms. And, the Board re-appointed the current members of the Supervisory Committee to an additional one-year term. St. Lawrence FCU Merger
The proposed merger with St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union concluded during a special meeting held on August 28, 2023, with SLFCU members voting against the merger.
We are disappointed with the final outcome of the membership vote. SeaComm wishes the membership and staff of St. Lawrence all its best. We extend our gratitude to the senior management team of St. Lawrence who worked hand in hand with us to try and make this merger happen. SeaComm will move forward on a separate path and continue to offer the very best value to our membership, staff and the communities in which we serve. Also, in the cooperative spirit of the credit union movement, we have and will continue to have a good relationship with St. Lawrence.
“Although disappointed with the outcome, SeaComm’s Board of Directors will continue to ensure we move forward strategically, by focusing on our nearly 54,000 members with the same high-touch, exceptional service and diverse product and service offering they have come to know and expect from us,” states SeaComm Board Chairman Myron Burns.
Great Place to Work Certification
Earlier this year, our employees were able to participate in our annual employee engagement survey process through Great Place to Work. This is the 11th consecutive year. We were very happy to report that after we received the results, 90% of our employees say that overall SeaComm is a great place to work. Some of what we learned is that 96% felt good about the way we contribute to the community; 95% stated that management honest and ethical in its business practices; 96% agree that management is competent at running the business; 95% say when you join the company, you are made to feel welcome and 93% say they are proud to tell others they work for SeaComm. We are extremely proud to be included within this privileged group across the country. We held a special recognition day on June 13th for all staff.
60th Anniversary
As we continue to celebrate our milestone 60th anniversary, we will be focusing our attention on ensuring that every interaction with our membership exceeds expectation.
This focus continues to meet the ever-changing business landscape and provide each member with a strong value proposition in being a member of our credit union. This is done through a consistent and responsible growth strategy.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, management and staff, we are grateful to our, over 53,900 members who have put their trust in us and we will continue to work diligently to remain strong in order to be able to serve well into the future.

In support of local business members, SeaComm highlights small business owner stories in the quarterly business newsletter called “Your Bottom Line.” Here are the recaps of the first and second quarters of 2023:
The Honey Do Team
“98% of our focus has to do with your house. We’re a residential contractor that will give your small project the attention it deserves.”
When you need to have work done on your home, it’s important to have a reliable crew that will do a great job. Look no further than The Honey Do Team and owners Bill and Eric Jost of Plattsburgh, New York. Their extensive knowledge in business and construction make them and their company an ideal partner for your home projects. Their story is one of adapting to the times and using quality skills to provide a great service to the community.
Bill and Eric Jost founded B & E Development, LLC in 2000. The business originally began as a real estate company that was flipping houses until 2009, when the volatile housing market became a challenge. The company transitioned to a contractor for hire business, since they had perfected their craft for fixing up houses. Deciding to switch to construction allowed for bigger projects and even building houses from the ground up. In 2018, Bill and Eric decided to make another change. “We wanted to focus on smaller projects,” said Bill. Instead of large scale construction, they would look to do more residential jobs, and in 2019, The Honey Do Team was born.
Today, the quality of work that The Honey Do Team produces is very important to the owners. Bill is proud of the level of skill his team has, “Everyone on the team is talented, experienced, and a well-rounded craftsman.” The team consists of roughly one dozen employees, and they routinely hire more laborers if the project warrants it. “We put a lot of effort in hiring good people,” said Bill. In 2023, hiring skilled laborers can be a challenge with all of the competition.
The Honey Do Team prides themselves in not only the quality of the craftsmanship they produce, but also the dedication of their crew.
When it comes to the services they provide, Bill said, “98% of our focus has to do with your house. We’re a residential contractor that will give your small project the attention it deserves.” Whether it’s building an addition, or remodeling a kitchen or bathroom, The Honey Do Team has the experience to get the project done. Focusing on both interior and exterior projects, they provide a level of professionalism that has their clients raving, and their service area growing. For years they have served the Plattsburgh area, and have recently expanded out to Massena, Potsdam, Canton, and surrounding areas.
The Honey Do Team has been working with SeaComm since 2021. The relationship started because Bill was looking to invest in a property. He said, “Its great working with business lending. We’ve had fabulous transactions with Christina Smutz.” Bill feels that there needs to be a level trust with those you do business with. “SeaComm has met my expectations very nicely, which is how everyone prefers to do business.”

Bonno Builders
“I live there, I know the community, and when they book a job with me I get to help them out while they help my business out.”
Bill Bonno’s love of building comes from his father, who built houses himself. When Bill was younger he would help his father out with jobs, and eventually graduated from BOCES, where he took multiple courses related to construction and building. He always knew he wanted to own his own business, and in 2014 he took the first steps. Bill started Bonno Construction as a DBA, and devised a plan to expand his business. Two years later in 2016, with one carpenter and one laborer, Bill formed Bonno Builders LLC and experienced a busy year of work. After three years, his company grew to seven workers, and has continued to expand since then. Bill currently has 10 full time employees, and will add five more during the busier summer months of the year. He hires high school and college students when the projects start to add up, helping the next generation of builders learn and grow their skill sets.
Bonno Builders LLC has done work in various towns throughout St. Lawrence County, NY. Bill commented on the variety of services his company offers, “We do anything from one day jobs, to full houses that take anywhere from six to eight months.” They’ve even done commercial work, as well as contracts on schools throughout the county. From laying tile and pouring concrete, to boiler work and insulation, there doesn’t seem to be a job too big, or small, for Bonno Builders. also discussed how unpredictable weather and seasonal changes can affect the timing of jobs. “We have a small window of time to get the outside work done in order to do inside work for winter, and keep everyone working.”
He seems to be doing a pretty good job, because he said most of the people who work for him have been around since the early days.
Bill is a big believer in small towns and communities helping each other. He sees it with the interactions he has with clients. When asked what he most enjoys about his work, Bill said, “the satisfaction of the people in the community.” A majority of Bonno Builders LLC’s work comes out of Colton, NY, near Potsdam. “I live there, I know the community, and when they book a job with me I get to help them out while they help my business out.” Support from the community, along with quality service and craftsmanship, has allowed Bill to fulfill his passion of owning his own business.
When Bill wanted to begin the journey of owning his own business he knew he needed help. “When I started my company in 2014 I looked around at banks to see who would work with me and I spoke with SeaComm’s Potsdam branch, and it worked out great.” As his company grew, he continued his relationship with SeaComm. “When I formed the LLC it worked out even better. I’ve worked with people in the Massena, Potsdam, and Canton branches, and they’ve been totally awesome.

Donations & Community Outreach
St. Lawrence Health Foundation
We recently made a $100,000 commitment to the Great Care, Right Here Fundraising Campaign to support the construction of the St. Lawrence Health (SLH) Regional Care Pavilion at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. The Great Care, Right Here Fundraising Campaign goal is to raise funds from government sources, individuals, private foundations, and vendors to help support the construction of the Regional Care Pavilion, and advance workforce development through education.

4-H Camp Overlook
We were honored to contribute $2,828 in support of 4-H Camp Overlook Scholarship Fund. The funds will allow local children the opportunity to experience nature adventures and environmental awareness programs at the camp, which is located in the hamlet of Mountain View, NY. Four scholarships will go toward one-week sessions and another three will be for the Cloverbud Camp, which is a three-day session. The scholarships are available to students in both Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties who would not otherwise have the funds to attend.

Champlain Valley Fair
We were happy to donate $2,500 to the 101st Champlain Valley Fair. This year, the fair will take place Friday, August 25 through Sunday, September 3 in Essex Junction. As Vermont’s largest annual event, The Champlain Valley Fair attracts over 120,000 guests, and features rides, animal exhibits, food vendors, and entertainment. The fair is a staple of the community and operates with help from volunteers and donors like SeaComm.

So far in 2023, SeaComm has contributed to many local organizations. This included a donation of $5,000 to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley, $1,000 to the Committee on Temporary Shelter in Vermont, and $10,000 to the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club.

SeaComm Supports Zoo NY
Brew at the Zoo & SeaComm Butterfly House
We recently donated $10,000 to Zoo New York at Thompson Park in Watertown. The funds have been used to support the Zoo’s 15th annual Brew at the Zoo Concert Series as well as their Butterfly Exhibit, which has been named “SeaComm Butterfly House” for the season.
The Butterfly House at Zoo New York is an attraction that runs from spring through late summer. The exhibit allows visitors to experience many native butterfly species up close for a one-of-a-kind educational experience. Before the Butterfly House opens, a team of staff and volunteers restores the exhibit to create a home for over 10 different butterfly species and multiple types of plants.
“We are proud to support Zoo NY at Thompson Park. Their Brew at the Zoo Concert Series and Butterfly House bring a lot of joy to the community,” said Scott A. Internal Promotions
Wendy Vatter of Brasher Falls is now the VP of Human Resources. Wendy joined SeaComm in 2013, and has served in the positions of Human Resources Specialist, Senior Human Resources Specialist, Human Resources Manager, and Assistant Vice President of Human Resources. Wendy studied at Mater Dei College where she earned an associate degree in business management. Wendy also holds a certification from the Society of Human Resources Management, and she is currently the Membership Committee Chair for the St. Lawrence County Chapter of the Society of Human Resources. In her new role, Wendy continues to oversee the human resources day-to-day operations, as well as the organization’s strategic focus on its people.
Jonathan Haggard of Massena is now the AVP of Information Systems (IS). Jonathan previously served in the position of Information Systems Manager, based at the credit union’s headquarters. Jonathan came to SeaComm with more than 20 years of experience within the IT field. In his role as AVP of Information Systems, Jonathan continues to oversee the daily operations and workflow of the IS department and ensures the credit union’s technology is working properly and efficiently. Prior to joining the credit union, Jonathan served as the Director of Information Systems for several local healthcare centers.

Volunteering at St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum
The St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum in Madrid, NY, hosted a three-day national tractor event June 9-11. Members of the SeaComm management team volunteered to assist with admissions, shuttling guests and working in the food concession.

Shirley Eagles Scholarship Recipients
Madelyn Blanchard, daughter of Justin Blanchard and Morgan Danko of Massena, graduated from Massena Central School with a 94.09 grade point average. As an avid volunteer, Madelyn dedicated her free time to many causes, including the American Legion and the American Red Cross, where she expanded her love of helping others. Beginning in Fall 2023, Madelyn will attend St. John Fisher University in Rochester, where she will pursue a degree in nursing.
Logan Eggleston, son of Darin and Barb Eggleston of Massena, graduated from Massena Central School with a GPA of 100.98. During his high school career, Logan spent numerous hours volunteering with the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and St. Vincent DePaul Pantry. Logan has been accepted to Juniata College in Pennsylvania, where he will study biochemistry beginning in the fall 2023 semester. Logan’s goal is to become an osteopathic physician practicing emergency medicine.
Jadelyn McMillan, is the daughter of Alex and Kaitlin Prashaw of Massena. Jadelyn concluded her high school career at Massena Central School with a 96.25 GPA. Throughout high school, Jadelyn was an avid volunteer in her community while maintaining a part-time job. Jadelyn will major in political science with a focus on pre-law at Emmanuel College in Boston, where she has been awarded the Dean’s Scholarship, Louis Ridge Scholarship, and Emmanuel Grant.
Aaron Binion, is the son of Suzanne and Joseph Binion of Massena. Aaron completed his high school career at Massena Central School with a grade point average of 99.36. Throughout high school, Aaron dedicated his free time as a volunteer with hospice and Rotary Club. He also spent summers as a lifeguard at Waddington Beach. Aaron has been accepted to Union College in Schenectady, where he will major in mechanical engineering come fall 2023.
Melanie McLean, daughter of Kristin and Peter McLean of Norwood, is a graduate of St. Lawrence Central High School with a GPA of 98.95. As an active member in the community, Melanie has spent her time volunteering at local summer festivals, and within her school’s greenhouse and freshman orientation. Melanie has been the recipient of multiple scholastic and athletic awards during her high school career. She will attend St. Lawrence University beginning in the fall, where she will study digital media, film, and business.
Matthew David Wilson, son of David and Linda Wilson of Hammond, graduated from Morristown Central School with a 95.81 grade point average. Matthew has spent multiple hours volunteering for the elderly, car washes, and food drives. He also helps out on his family’s dairy farm. Matthew will study dairy management at SUNY Morrisville this fall, where he hopes to gain the knowledge necessary to come back and continue his family’s legacy.
Beatrice Brooks, is the daughter of Juanita and Kent Brooks of North Bangor, and a graduate of Franklin Academy. Beatrice has concluded her high school education with a grade point average of 97.94. While attending school, Beatrice volunteered with her church food pantry, the Rotary Club of Malone, as well as Franklin County Dairy. Beatrice will attend Houghton University come fall 2023,where she will major in history.
Wyatt Benedict, son of Owen and Alison Benedict of Fort Covington, graduated from Salmon River High School with a GPA of 100.15. Throughout high school, Wyatt spent his time volunteering in his neighborhood, doing yard work and clearing snow. He also helped elderly neighbors maintain their boats. Wyatt will attend Daemen University in Amherst, where he will take part in the Physical Therapy BS/DPT program this coming fall.
Christian Simons, is the son of Violet Simons of Canton. Christian graduated from Hugh C. Williams High School with a grade point average of 88.74. During his high school career, Christian was a volunteer with the Norwood Church Thrift Store and maintained a part-time job. He was the recipient of the Green Scholarship and Ellsworth Scholarship. Christian will be attending SUNY Brockport in the fall 2023 semester, where he will study biology.
Vaughan Noble, (photo missing) Son of Denise Noble and Christopher Wasser of Richmond, VT, graduated from Mount Mansfield Union High School with a 3.47 GPA. As a member of the Boy Scouts, Vaughan volunteered in many projects, including town meetings and ScoutPower. He also volunteered at his school’s freshman orientation, and received the Odyssey of the Mind Award. Vaughan will attend American University in fall 2023, where he was chosen to be part of the honors program, and awarded a Dean’s Scholarship. He will double major in history and music.
